art-ma: More than just a name

art-ma: More than just a name

    by Team Art-Ma

A name is not just a name

When deciding a name for this venture, our goal was to arrive at a word or combination of words that spark latent energy within you. So, as a first step, we decided to explore energy in its most primal form to find a name that would resonate with any individual, group, or community when they looked at or experienced spiritual art. The aim was also to instantly put the observer in a frame of mind where he or she can absorb everything that spiritual art has to offer.

To us, the best way was to use subtle, yet suggestive visual context in combination with a familiar written script. After all, art, even in it’s most basic form, has the ability to evoke emotion and bring about such interpretation from an individual.

Whilst exploring this, we delved deeper into the concept of consciousness and tried to understand what it truly meant. The idea was to find a link between perception, be it conscious or subconscious, and art. This train of thought was led by the notion that art is a reflection of the soul, and so, we started contemplating the path of the soul or spirit. In Eastern philosophy, this spirit is called the ātma (ātman).

The word ‘soul’ is understood differently across the planet and the same holds true for how art is perceived and so, we found it fitting to our message. With some wordplay, ‘āt’ and ‘ma’ were separated and ‘āt’ was changed to the word ‘art’. This would mean that ‘art-ma’ can be interpreted as either the ‘ātma’, the soul or spirit, or ‘art mā’, as in the ‘mother of art’ (the word, ‘mā’, means ‘mother’ in many cultures). This amalgamation is the foundation of all we do, and is a direct representation of our ability to unearth art in everything, as long as the mind is one with the concept of spiritual art.

So, immerse yourself in our selection of artwork that’s steeped in spirituality and embark on a journey of self-discovery.
